Vaginal Discharge

This is the term used to refer to vaginal secretion from the vaginal canal which is normal in female and can occur at any age. It is a fluid that makes vagina canal clean and moist which have a protective effect thereby preventing infection.
Normal physiological vaginal discharges often have characteristics which are clear or whitish in colour. It could be wet, sticky and thick in nature. During your ovulatory period which is called mid cycle you will notice wet, slippery and stretchy vaginal discharge which is normal, after wards the cervical mucus becomes dry and thick. Normal vaginal discharge doesn’t have unpleasant smell. The amount of discharge is determined by a lot of factors which can be sequel to normal changes in the body. An increase in secretion occurs during sexual intercourse, pregnancy, use of contraception (often called birth control pills) and antibiotics.
However abnormal discharge can present with excessive discharge that can be foul smelling (malodour, fishy etc), thick, cottage cheese-like in appearance and also has change in colour which could be greenish, yellowish, bloody etc. The abnormal discharge can also be associated with itching leading to perineal sore, blisters, bleeding, painful urination and pelvic pain.
Treatment for abnormal discharge with infection involves you consulting your doctor who will investigate and place you on medication accordingly.
